As the newly appointed Principal to St. Mary's French Immersion Catholic School I was excited to be invited by the TLLP team to join them on a learning tour of the Indigenous Support Centres in our Sault Ste. Marie Community. From the moment I got into the “mini bus” I felt the excitement of the team. Our driver was Mona, our Indigenous Lead her at Huron-Superior CDSB and she was on a mission of learning and awareness.
The teachers and Registered Early Childhood Educators and I thoroughly enjoyed the stops at the Indian Friendship Centre, the Metis Office and Garden River Indian Reserve. Each location proudly shared resources and customs and brought the team new awareness and understanding.
The highlight of the day was attending an Indigenous funeral and sharing in the customs associated with it.
Throughout the whole day I was most impressed with the team as all learnings and experiences involved and revolved around how these could be used with their students. Their passion for caring about how these events could be used and shared with their young students was admirable and very impressive to me.
I am very happy to be supporting the learning and passion of this TLLP at St.Mary's French Immersion Catholic School and enjoy seeing the creativity and growth of the students.
